UAlbany NanoCollege to host prestigious International Nanotechnology Conference on Communication and Cooperation

The College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) of the University at Albany announced today that it has been selected to host the International Nanotechnology Conference on Communication and Cooperation (INC7), a prestigious annual event aimed at fostering global collaboration in nanotechnology as a means of advancing research and spurring economic growth in the 21st century.

Industry leaders, senior researchers and policy makers from around the world will gather at CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex from May 16 through 19 for the conference, designed to further strengthen the dialogue between Europe, Japan and the United States in the emerging science of nanotechnology. INC7 was originally scheduled to be held in Japan, but was relocated to CNSE in the aftermath of an earthquake that hit eastern Japan on March 11.

Considered one of the key conferences to share developments in major nanotechnology research programs worldwide, INC7 will feature overview presentations of initiatives led by government, industry and academia in each region; technical sessions highlighting opportunities and challenges in nanoelectronics and related fields; and topical sessions showcasing the economic and societal implications of nanotechnology.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Leo Esaki, who was awarded the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physics in recognition of his pioneering work on electron tunneling in solids.

“The UAlbany NanoCollege appreciates the opportunity to host INC7, which is recognized globally as an important venue to share critical information and foster essential collaboration to enable and advance leading-edge nanotechnology research, development and commercialization,” said Richard Brilla, CNSE Vice President for Strategy, Alliances and Consortia. “In building on the success of previous INC conferences, as well as the pioneering public-private partnership model at CNSE that is fueling nanotechnology innovations for a variety of industries, we look forward to providing a unique platform to support and enhance these vital discussions.”

“We are pleased to welcome leaders from the worldwide nanotechnology industry, including esteemed international scientists and researchers, to the UAlbany NanoCollege for the important INC7 conference,” said Melissa Preston, CNSE Assistant Vice President, Special Events and Programs. “This gathering further illustrates CNSE’s expanding role as a global nexus to support the rapid growth of the emerging nanotechnology sector.”

The UAlbany CNSE is the first college in the world dedicated to education, research, development, and deployment in the emerging disciplines of nanoscience, nanoengineering, nanobioscience, and nanoeconomics. CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex is the most advanced research enterprise of its kind at any university in the world. With over $7 billion in high-tech investments, the 800,000-square-foot complex attracts corporate partners from around the world and offers students a one-of-a-kind academic experience. The UAlbany NanoCollege houses the only fully-integrated, 300mm wafer, computer chip pilot prototyping and demonstration line within 80,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms. More than 2,600 scientists, researchers, engineers, students, and faculty work on site, from companies including IBM, GlobalFoundries, SEMATECH, Toshiba, Samsung, Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron, ASML, Novellus Systems, Vistec Lithography and Atotech. An expansion now underway is projected to increase the size of CNSE’s Albany NanoTech Complex to over 1,250,000 square feet of next-generation infrastructure housing over 135,000 square feet of Class 1 capable cleanrooms and more than 3,750 scientists, researchers and engineers from CNSE and global corporations.
