9/22/2006 11:02:37 AM Highlights of the Materials, Medicine, and Nanotechnology Summit, Coming to Cleveland on October 2-5
Shaping the future of medical
devices and implants, an historic gathering of clinicians and engineers
will participate in the Materials, Medicine, and Nanotechnology Summit
hosted by Cleveland Clinic, ASM International and Nano-Network, October 2-5
in Cleveland. Highlights include:
MEMS Commercialization Panel -- Held during the Wednesday evening
banquet, this panel will describe the multidisciplinary collaboration and
business experience required to translate new and novel MEMS concepts from
the engineering laboratory into successful medical products for clinical
use by doctors and patients. The unique obstacles and pathways
characteristic to commercialization of MEMS for implantable medical devices
will be discussed by representative company executives and entrepreneurs.
The panel will be moderated by Shuvo Roy, Ph.D., Co-Director of the BioMEMS
Laboratory at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, Department of
Biomedical Engineering.
Seminars on Materials for Medical Devices -- Over the past two years,
ASM has provided material and process-based seminars to more than 1,000
medical device professionals. Now for the first time in Cleveland, ASM will
hold four popular MPMD seminars concurrently on Monday, October 2. Morning
seminars will answer the needs of engineers and materials professionals,
while afternoon seminars are designed for clinicians and medical
practitioners. (Separate registration is required.) Topics include:
- Basic Metallurgy for the Medical Device Engineer:
- Fracture, Fatigue and Corrosion for Medical Device Engineers:
- Nitinol for Medical Devices:
- Polymers for Medical Devices:
Plenary Sessions -- On Tuesday and Wednesday, October 3-4, plenary
speakers will cover the spectrum of materials-related challenges in
medicine:
- Orthopedics and Spinal Disorders (Edward C. Benzel, M.D., Cleveland
Clinic and Dana Medlin, Ph.D., South Dakota School of Mines and
Technology)
- Cardiovascular (Leonard Golding, M.D., Cleveland Clinic and Alan Pelton,
Ph.D., Nitinol Devices and Components, a J&J Company)
- Neurology (Ali Rezai, M.D., Cleveland Clinic and Krishna Venugopalan,
Ph.D., Codman and Shurtleff, a J&J Company)
- Nanotechnology (Michael Gertner, M.D., Stanford University; Samuel
Wickline, M.D., Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical
Center; Steven A. Toms, M.D., Cleveland Clinic, and Michael N. Helmus,
Ph.D., Advance Nanotech)
- Engineered Biomaterials (Vincent C. Hascall, Ph.D., Cleveland Clinic;
Antony Calabro, Ph.D., Cleveland Clinic; Jonathan Baskin, M.D., Case
Western Reserve University)
- Minimally Invasive Surgery (Peter Rasmussen, M.D., Cleveland Clinic; Roy
Greenberg, M.D., Cleveland Clinic; Sanjay Shrivastava, Ph.D., Abbott
Vascular Devices)
Keynote Sessions -- On Wednesday and Thursday, October 4-5, the program
divides into tracks on Nanomedicine and on Materials and Processes for
Medical Devices.
- Nanomedicine features sessions on Biomedical Sensors, Drug Delivery,
Tissue Engineering and Bioscale Diagnostics.
- Materials and Processes features sessions on Surface Modification and
Coatings, Nanoparticles and Nanomaterials, Failure Analysis and Startup
to Commercialization.
Attendees are encouraged to register by 4 p.m. September 28 to pay a
fee as low as $195. After 4 p.m. on the 28th, registration fees will
increase to $895 for all attendees.
