Nano Revolution Fires Up Knoxville-Oak Ridge Innovation Valley

The nanotechnology revolution -- affecting everything from car bumpers to drug development -- has a new home: the Knoxville-Oak Ridge Innovation Valley. Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have successfully begun producing neutrons at the country's largest science project, the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).

Combined with world-class computational assets at ORNL, the landmark $1.4 billion facility will allow scientists to understand the structure and dynamics of material.

East Tennessee organizations have formed the Innovation Valley Nano Alliance, http://www.nanovalley.us/, to accelerate nanotechnology discovery and commercialization using the region's unique confluence of resources.

Nanotechnology already has helped improve airplanes, credit cards, drugs, compact discs, windshields, next generation batteries and fuel cells and the mapping of oil deposits. When fully operational, the Department of Energy installation -- which was designed by six national labs and is managed by the University of Tennessee and Battelle partnership -- will produce a pulsing neutron stream ten times more intense than any other research facility in the world.

For more information about the Spallation Neutron Source, visit the Oak Ridge National Laboratory news site: http://www.ornl.gov/.
